The Lakshadweep Islands ( 'Laccadive' as they were formerly known) are one of the few remaining virgin islands in the world and the only coral reef islands in the Indian waters. The soft silvery beaches, the coral atolls built on ancient volcanic formations, living corals, vast beautiful lagoons, the matchless marine environment, and multi-coloured coral fishes make Lakshadweep a real paradise in the Arabian sea.

The lagoon runs through the entire length of the island and differs in width and depth. Most of the islands have on their western side a lagoon enclosed by a coral reef. The coral reef, like a boundary wall, protects the lagoon from the rough sea. As a result, the water of the lagoon is calm and serene within the periphery beyond which the pale blue turns into deep blue due to the depth.

The islands are irregularly scattered in the Arabian Sea about 185 miles (300 km) off the Kerala coast, between 8" and 12"-30' north latitude and between 71" and 74" east longitude. Because of their oceanic location and the difficulties of access, most of the reefs remain pristine with little human impact. The islands are the geographical extension of the Maldives island chain. There are in all 36 coral islands and several sunken banks, open reefs, and sandbanks.
