This website has been put together as a retrospective look at the life and work of the artist Andrew Coates.
Without the encumbrance of any formal training, Andrew Coates has found a freedom and expression in capturing the natural landscape unique to himself and rarely achieved by contemporary landscape painters. Unusual for a painter who works in such a meticulous style is his ability to create paintings that appear totally natural and not laboured. When you casually look into his work there is a compulsion to enter deeper into the landscape unaware of escaping the involvement of any painter.
Andrew's treatment of light in the landscape and on water, his clarity of paint and intensity of colour expand an everyday reality into works of shimmering vitality.
