If everything that is unique and enduring about our state – our writers, painters, musicians, chefs, fabric artist, theatre companies, dancers, fine art centers and museums – were suddenly gone?
Not only would it be a huge loss for our state’s identity, it would be a huge blow to our economy. Arts programs in Mississippi generate $2.6 billion for the state’s economy, according to research from the National Endowment for the Arts. The arts support 26,000 jobs in Mississippi. Those are not just artists, but jobs supported by the arts being in our communities.
Dinner before a show at New Stage Theatre, Ford Center or your local community theatre? Means jobs for chefs, waiters, and hostesses. Which means the restaurant has to order food, buy tables clothes, pay rent, and pay taxes. Paying for parking means revenue for local cities. A babysitter means a job.
