The origins of the “Baggerweieren” are to be found around the 1950s/1960s when the exploitation of the local sand pits ceased and the resulting holes filled with water from underground sources.
In 2020, the municipality of Schengen, owner of the site, entrusted the non-profit association “Erliefnis Baggerweier” with the management and operation of the recreation area.
