When you gave your consent for your baby to take part in BESS you gave us permission to collect some of the mucus from deeper inside your baby’s lungs (Bronchoalveolar Lavage; BAL).

We told you that these mucus samples would be sent to the University of Southampton and University of Liverpool for use in our research, to look for signs of infection and inflammation in the lungs. In the time since you agreed for your baby to take part, some of our research team have moved from the University of Southampton to University College London (UCL) and will be continuing some of their work at UCL. This means that your baby’s samples may be sent to UCL, as well as Southampton or Liverpool.
