Without its accessories, the violin looses a quarter of its weight... Strings, bridge, fingerboard, pegs, chinrest, tailpiece, have all been adapted on the instrument by the luthier. The violin family hasn't changed much over the past 300 years, however, during the same period it has seen a great evolution of its accessories and equipment.
This reflects the musical evolution of that period. Technological progress in string making has improved sound projection, and the ability to tune easier and more accurately. Playing had been made much more comfortable with the invention of the chinrest and the endpin. The choice of accessories contributes to the sound and to the aesthetics of the instrument.
