Over one hundred years ago, a group of agriculture teachers gathered together to share best practices and improve their craft. From this initial meeting California Agricultural Teachers' Association (CATA) was born. That first meeting took place in the summer of 1920, at the University of California Davis Farm. At the meeting, agricultural teachers from across the state developed the organizational structure of CATA and elected officers to serve the organization.

Ever since that first meeting, the CATA organization has worked to meet its mission to promote and improve the teaching of agriculture in the public and private schools of California and to foster the welfare of those engaged in this work at the middle school, high school, community college, and university levels.

Currently, CATA has over one thousand voluntary members dedicated to the organization's mission and improving agricultural education across the state at all levels.
