The club was founded in 1963 at a meeting in the Tredegar Arms, Clifton Street, Cardiff, when several former GKN (Cardiff) FC players, who had left the highly successful Sloper Road club in 1961-62, entered a side in the Cardiff Combination Football League. An earlier attempt in 1962 had missed the deadline for entry into the Combination League and the team had played under the banner of the Oddfellows Club in Newport Road, Cardiff.
Permission to use the Draconians name had been granted by the Football Association of Wales who had used the name for its representative Senior Amateur side who played their English counterparts Pegasus on an annual home and away basis. Those fixtures had been played at Ninian Park, Cardiff and White City, London. The name has been retained ever since although after amalgamation with Gabalfa FC in 1983-84 the name was changed by John Dyer for the 1984-85 season to Gabalfa Draconians. In 1999-2000 the Cardif
