The year is 1972, the place is Little Corn Island Nicaragua, Carl "Carlito" Archibold and his cousin serenely swim the placid blue water surrounding their little island. As they circle the island they carry with them a sack which within a short time is filled with live lobster. Heading home to their small island community of 250 or so islanders they are ready for their daily feast of fresh lobster. They have to hurry though, it's getting dark and Little Corn has no electricity and thus no light.

Carlito, after spending the last 20 years as a captain on a fishing boat based at various U.S. ports, and surviving a shipwreck at sea, decides it is time to return home. Back to Little Corn Island. His cousin, now a successful commercial lobster fisherman has stayed on Little Corn growing a business and a family. Carlito returns to an island not much changed. As a matter of fact, the day he arrives is the first day that the community water system starts.
