Experian is one of the big three US credit bureaus. According to a recent FTC press release, when you put a credit freeze on your Experian account (something they are legally required to let you do), they make you create an account with an email address. Then they sent spam to that address, falsely claiming it was account updates, and provided no way to tell them to stop.

The FTC objected and has proposed a $650,000 fine under CAN-SPAM. While that is the largest CAN-SPAM fine we've heard about actually being collected, it is also about 0.01% of Experian's annual revenue so it hardly even qualifies as a slap on the wrist. Unfortunately spam continues to be a problem with its perpetrators ranging from individuals sending fake invoices up to giant multinational corporations.
