The story begins in 1626, when Lord François de Baradat, the rich proprietor of a vineyard in Fleury-la-Rivière in Champagne and favourite courtier of King Louis XIII, is condemned to exile by Richelieu, for romantic liaisons and for provoking the Marquis de Seguier to a duel. Returning to his estate in Fleury-la-Rivière, which at the time was renowned for its red wine, François de Baradat had to wait until the death of Richelieu to fi nd favour in the royal court again.
