The reality is that one in three people are affected by substance use disorders. The disease of addiction affects all people- no matter their occupation, income level, race or community status. Our communities are in the midst of an addiction epidemic, fueled by opioid use. In fact, in 2022, the Sussex County area had 28 overdose deaths due to heroin, prescription medications and other drugs, along with 95 overdoses where Narcan was administered by EMS or Law Enforcement. Use of opioids, including heroin and prescription medication, causes a physical dependence characterized by withdrawal symptoms when stopped.
