Addiction is the most severe form of substance use disorder, associated with compulsive or uncontrolled use of one or more substances and is defined as a chronic brain disease that has the potential for both recurrence (relapse) and recovery. Use of opioids, including heroin and prescription medication, causes a physical dependence characterized by withdrawal symptoms when stopped. There are many evidence-based approaches that can be effective in treating addiction.
