Like many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Zambia has been heavily affected by HIV/AIDS and high rates of poverty. The increase in HIV related deaths of prime-aged adults has led to pronounced concentrations of orphans in the country.

In 2014, about 11% of children ages 0-17 living in Zambian households were orphaned. Many extended family members have been left with the challenge of raising these children under impoverished conditions. While orphans in orphanages are generally more visible to outside aid and volunteers, orphans in poverty being raised by extended family tend to lie in the shadows.
