On the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains, Centocow is one of the many scattered villages and communities of KwaZulu-Natal. It lies in a deeply rural area above the banks of the river Umzimkhulu. The hospital and the 19th century church put Centocow on the map as an important centre of communication and transport.
With the dedication of the women in this rural area, 60 rural pre-schools serving children from 2 to 5 years old have developed over the last 20 years. The teachers are mostly unwaged and the pre-schools poorly resourced. Devon Centocow Link has supported the teachers training and children’s resources during this time.
One of the earliest projects of the Family Literacy Project, based in Underberg, was to set up community libraries as part of a long term goal to improve literacy amongst adults and therefore encourage reading habits to encourage children’s learning. The Family Literacy Project is now one of Devon Centocow Link’s partners.
