The workings of nature have intrigued man since the dawn of civilization. At the heart of the understanding of nature is physics, or natural philosophy as it was known in Newton's time. As the Nineteenth Century drew to a close, it became clear that the world-view we inherited from Newton was not complete. Two great changes were on the horizon, in the form of relativity and quantum mechanics. Einstein had a hand in both, though his principal contribution was creation of the theory of relativity.
