Nathan Hale was the son of a deacon. His mother was a descendant of an influential Puritan minister. Nathan graduated from Yale with the highest honors. He was a school teacher, but when the Revolutionary War broke out, he became a first lieutenant in order to serve God and country. When General Washington needed a spy to find out how and when the British were going to invade Manhattan, Hale volunteered, knowing that the price of being caught was death.
