I began teaching online around 1991, moving to the Web in 1994. I decided from the start that I would put up all my history material on a public server, free to anyone to use for education purposes. My mantra was that information should be free and only teaching costs money.
Over the next fifteen years I not only put up all my old courses, I developed entirely new ones—in all, over a thousand pages covering pre-modern European history. All this was on a server where I worked at Boise State University. When I retired, however, I was required to remove all the material. I'm now slowly putting this material back into circulation. The original courses held things like discussion questions, assignments, and so on. This site has just the meat, the actual essays themselves.
I have been posting essays about once a month, with an occasional hiatus. A link the schedule is below. The courses from which the essays are drawn are History of Western Civilization, The Late Middle Ages, The Crusades, and The Reformation. In addition I have an extensive essay on medieval pilgrimage. All these will be published eventually. The Schedule of Articles has links to all published essays along with an indication of what is upcoming.
