ELI "Extreme Light Infrastructure" is a new research infrastructure of pan-European interest and part of the European roadmap (ESFRI). The major scientific laboratories of this infrastructure are under construction in the so-called Pillars - the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. These are laser devices designed to create high-intensity laser pulses with the capability to study processes such as controlled nuclear fusion and the generation of electron-positron pair from power laser beams.

With purpose of participation of Bulgaria and Bulgarian research centers in this European project, a consortium of scientific organizations and universities, leading in laser physics research in Bulgaria, was established. These are the  Institute of Electronics - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences , the  Physics Department, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"  and the  Institute of Solid State Physics - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences .

The participation of Bulgaria with this consortium in ELI as a pan-European research infrastructure will contribute to play role as an active member and future user of the equipment as well as to the rebuild of Bulgarian laboratories using powerful optical fields in order to prepare and conduct experiments in Bulgaria from various scientific institutes in the country, but also, for example, from the Western Balkans.
