The Walled City of Famagusta is a cultural heritage site of international importance that has survived a varied, at times turbulent history. Originally founded in the 3rd century B.C. and located along the busy shipping lanes of the eastern Mediterranean, Famagusta was once a bustling port for merchants from Europe and the Near East, as well as for the armies of the Christian crusaders and Ottoman Turks. Its prominence soared following the fall of Acre in 1291 A.D., when the small harbor town became a major
