IN THE EARLY 1990s, I was swept up in the powerful underground currents of the West Coast rave scene. Beginning in Southern California, then up to the Bay Area, and ultimately deep into the Mojave Desert, this ongoing journey has revealed to me the transformative power of music, collective dance, and tribal ritual. It has also expanded my limited notion of the DJ as simply a selector and technician to an understanding of the DJ as artist and shaman.
