Oh dear, did you have to ask so soon? They are a mash of genres, mostly sci-fi and fantasy but they also contain humour.
McGuire got fed up with waiting for someone to write the kinds of books she wanted to read so she wrote them herself. They are humorous science fiction, but with a fantasy plot, based in a dystopian parallel universe. There are more than one sentient species so not everyone is human, think StarWars with better jokes or maybe Narnia with lasers. The flagship, K’Barthan Series, is a twist on the standard chosen-one style fantasy plot but there are lasers and flying cars … oh and it’s portal fantasy.
There’s the odd a dash of romance here and there but don’t worry, there aren’t any squelchy bits. If you enjoy British humour and the kinds of books that get compared to Adams and Pratchett a lot then you might M T McGuire’s stuff. I’d be lying if I said it was as good as Pratchett and Adams. It’s not anything like theirs, either. In fact, it’s not really like anything else you’ll ever read unless you’ve read some of her other books.
