A lot has changed since J.B. Gray & Son opened its doors in downtown Portland’s Davis Building in 1945. In those days, type had to be set by hand, print jobs could take weeks, and color printing was beyond the reach of most budgets.
Things look much different today. The Davis Building is long-gone, digital technologies have streamlined most of the laborious and time-consuming prepress work, large print jobs can be completed literally overnight, and full-color printing is now the norm. Indeed, full-color digital printing is often less expensive than printing a single color on a traditional letterpress!
