I was told as a student to never, ever use Wikipedia as a source. The thing that makes Wikipedia great, collaboration, was the exact reason we were not to trust it. There were too many people involved in the creation and editing of articles, so, of course, not all of them can be credible.
I think that is where we often get it wrong. It is not the person who needs to be credible but the sources they provide when editing.
Learning about Wikipedia as an adult has been so interesting. I’m finding that a lot of the skepticism is not really justified. According to this article from Gigascience, the information is about as accurate as professional sources. The article also mentions that instances of vandalism may lead people to hesitant about Wikipedia.
