Every year in the US, UK, and EU a total of 19,000,000,000 [ 41 ] [ 20 ] chickens are processed for human consumption and this number will continue to grow. All animals that are slaughtered should be stunned in a humane way. This can only be done with a stunning system that is non-aversive . [ 24 ]
Some current methods of stunning chickens using electric waterbath or gas cause high levels of stress [ 8 ] [ 35 ] and some using carbon dioxide (CO2) could lead to compromises in the sustainability of our environment [ 39 ] .
