“Portrait of an Artist: Herman Deaton’s Studio” oil 12x16”
The painting is a “landscape/ still-life” of an artists studio space. Perhaps more importantly a “portrait” of an artist. My studio space is located in the Centre for Arts and Artists in Newton, IA and I have one of, I’m guessing, currently ten studios. Artist Herman Deaton held one of these spaces until he passed away. Painting the light in New Mexico required a higher key palette than my usual Midwest go to colors. The distance in view recedes with less saturated hues. The plateau caught the light on the horizontal ground mid section leaving the vertical surfaces in quieter tones in the distance.
