Welcome! I am a lecturer at The Elliott School of International Affairs and in the Honors Program at The George Washington University . I work on topics stemming from the history of political thought, focusing on problems in contemporary democratic theory. I teach courses on human rights, justice, resistance, and immigration ethics. I have broad research interests in race, gender and the law, the European and American public spheres, and health policy.
My current book project is about the responsibilities that liberal democracies owe to immigrants. My research considers how liberal democratic states should respond to political newcomers and those seeking forms of civic membership, including political rights and privileges as well as social recognition. I ask: how can liberal democracies retain unity yet still remain open to the plural possibilities that immigrants introduce? I received my Ph.D. from Brown University in 2016 and my MA from Columbia University in 2009. Before and during graduate school, I worked in professional capacities for an international NGO on democracy promotion and governance in Asia. As an undergraduate, I studied early modern and modern European history, the modern history of East Asia, as well as political theory and public law at Dartmouth College .
