On September 1st, 2019 Category-5 Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco and a day later Grand Bahama island, leaving a path of catastrophic destruction unprecedented in the Bahamas, the effects were among the worst experienced for any natural disaster, the hurricane then stalled over Grand Bahama for another day bringing with it a reported storm surge in some areas of as much as 20-25ft., at least 60% of Grand Bahama island was left submerged as Dorian moved away on September 3rd.
The Aquaponic facility at the Garden of the Groves, started in 2015, had already been through Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Irma in 2017, lessons had been learnt from those experiences and as Hurricane Dorian approached our hurricane plan was executed.
