MEANWHILE was defined by Meanwhile Space CIC during the Meanwhile Project (2009) as the opportunity presented by the period of time a property or space is left empty. As a concept, Meanwhile encompasses the philosophy that empty space is wrong and can be used to create opportunities for people. It goes beyond the popup period of just a few weeks to make full use of a space for the maximum period it is empty. MEANWHILE USES MEANWHILE use was first defined formally by Meanwhile Space CIC in the 2010 SQW report ‘Meanwhile Use Business Case’ as the “temporary use of vacant buildings or land for social or economic gain until they can be brought back into commercial use.” It makes practical use of the ‘pauses’ in property processes, the traditional cycle of design, permissions, build, market, tenant, re-market that every development undergoes.
