Chris Church presented a variety of tools and methods of sharpening edge tools by hand at Steve Voorheis’ shop.
Chris explained the fundamental concept of sharpening cutting tools, then demonstrated his methods. Chris quickly sharpened a couple chisels by using a low speed grinder, sandpaper on a glass plate and some diamond stones. He explained his choice of angles and micro bevels. He next showed a plane iron and had some great tips on rounding the edges.
One of my personal favorites was to sharpen a rounded profile on a hand jointer plane blade. Instead of moving the frog handle on the plane you could bias the plane to one side or another to create a perpendicular edge.
