Description: New Palace Opera Mahler Britten
As part of the same concert and in contrast, Arnold Schoenberg’s Tristanesque musical tone poem, Verklärte Nacht , about the redemptive power of love, began life as a string sextet before being arranged by the composer for string orchestra. In this latest incarnation, it will be presented in an arrangement for full orchestra by Jonathan Finney, emulating the sound world of Schoenberg’s own romantic masterpiece Gurrelieder .
We end the year in December with another masterpiece from the twentieth century, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress .
The culminating work in Stravinsky’s ‘neoclassical’ style brings together the Russian genius, the librettist WH Auden and the all-round eighteenth-century artist and wag, William Hogarth, as inspiration to produce a witty, dramatic and poignant masterpiece full of memorable characters who accompany our rake Tom on his odyssey towards apparent ruin, before being saved by a ‘good woman’.
