Much has been written about New York’s Moynihan Train Hall , a public infrastructure project that attempts some level of redemption for one of the worst architectural crimes in American history. Oftentimes lost in the mea culpas is any clear understanding of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, the complex, remarkable fellow whose name the edifice bears. He remains perhaps the most underappreciated public servants of our time.
The transportation facility, splendid by comparison with the one it augments, but no more than reminiscent of the original Penn Station , bears Moynihan’s name because, the news stories explain, he was an early proponent of the project. That understatement is a bit like saying the Washington Monument is named for George Washington because he was an early proponent of America. Moynihan understood the importance of transportation infrastructure and devoted years to improving it.
