In 1956, a few local boaters were looking for training.  The closest they could find was the Canadian Power Squadron in Vancouver.  With the help of the Vancouver members, a class was organized in Nanaimo for that winter.  Master Mariner Captain "Bert" Davis was the first instructor.

Fifteen people passed the exam in the spring of 1957 sparking more interest in a local CPS Squadron.  The group applied and the official launch of the Nanaimo Squadron took place on April 12, 1957.  Ours was the first squadron on Vancouver Island and the 3rd in British Columbia.

Since those humble beginnings, the Nanaimo Power & Sail Squadron has provided training for thousands of boaters.  We are proud that for 60 years we have helped so many people stay safe on the water.  Our primary goal today is still training boaters so they have fun - and get home safely.  Check out our upcoming courses and improve your own boating knowledge.  There is always more to learn!
