The goal of Open Nuclear Network is to reduce the risk that nuclear weapons are used in response to error, uncertainty or misdirection, particularly in the context of escalating conflict, using innovation, inclusion and dialogue supported by open source data.
In March 2023, the United Nations Institute of Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) conducted a field experiment, simulating an on-site inspection to verify the absence of nuclear warheads at a military site. As part of the experiment, UNIDIR, in collaboration with Open Nuclear Network (ONN), tested the applicability of commercially available satellite imagery to support the inspection.
ONN's Regional Issues Manager and Senior Analyst Rachel Minyoung Lee wrote a piece on the increased military actions undertaken by North Korea and how these actions should be understood within the larger framework of its domestic and foreign policies.
