Peter Conradi is probably best-known for his authorised biography of Dame Iris Murdoch ( Iris Murdoch : A Life ), for collecting and editing her essays ( Existentialists and Mystics ), war-time letters and a journal ( A Writer at War ) and for his study of her novels ( The Saint and the Artist ) which has gone into three editions.
But his interests are much wider and he has also written studies of the Welsh March ( At the Bright Hem of God ), of becoming a Buddhist ( Going Buddhist ) and a life of the soldier-poet Frank Thompson ( A Very English Hero ) who was murdered in Bulgaria in 1944.
Peter spent 1963-4 as a Middlesex Hospital medical student and another year (1967-8) on a Kibbutz. He also read English literature at UEA, Sussex, then UCL and taught at South Bank Polytechnic, the University of Colorado at Boulder, UEA, Kingston University where he was head of department, and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, during two turbulent years after the Berlin wall fell.
