A Podiatrist is a “Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM).” The podiatrist specializes in the treatment of foot and ankle problems. Most podiatrists have a four-year undergraduate degree prior to entering podiatric medical school. During the four years of medical training after college, special emphasis is placed on the medical and surgical identification and treatment of foot, ankle and leg problems. Podiatrists have one to three years of residency training in foot and ankle surgery following their four years
Podiatrists are specially trained to address any medical issues related to the foot or ankle. A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) treats issues related to chronic conditions like diabetes, poor circulation, obesity, or artery disorders. A podiatrist can also help if you have a foot or ankle injury, chronic pain, or deformity. Your feet and ankles form the foundation for the rest of the body, so podiatrists can help prevent problems that often lead to hip and back pain.
