Michelle Culpitt is a Melbourne based artist who uses proto-photographic processes that rely on exposures made under the sun and subject matter from the immediate environment to create spectral impressions of time and place.
Culpitt trained in darkroom photography at the Castlemaine Technical College, Prahran College with Graeme Hare, and RMIT Media Arts with Les Walking and Janina Green. Postgraduate study included fine art at Sydney College of the Arts, social sciences at RMIT and justice and criminology at RMIT.
She was an artist in residence at the Banff Centre, Canada, 2013; Tactile Arts, Darwin, 2014; the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland, 2015 and SIM, Iceland in 2015. She is a recipient of grants and awards from Arts NT, the Copyright Agency Ltd and the Australia Council for the Arts, and was a finalist in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award twice.
