When Elisabeth von Schmieder, Princess von Auersperg bought Quinta da Alegria in 2007, the garden and the house had fallen into disrepair. At the same time as restoring the house she began redesigning and replanting the 4 ha (10 acre) garden.
Quinta da Alegria was built at the end of the 17th century. It is situated at the edge of the historic town of Sintra. Quinta da Alegria is part of the Sintra World Heritage Site which was declared in 1995.
From 2018 small exclusive group visits can be arranged by prior appointment. Visitors may walk privately through the garden and enjoy its peace.
