I took Fall Sunrise on the Buffalo River on a late October day around 8:00 am. When we arrived at this location an hour or so earlier, the river v alley was still full of early morning fog. It took an hour for that fog to burn off and the wait was well worth it, in my opinion.

This location was a short stroll from the Steel Creek Campground near Ponca in northwest Arkansas. With the fog burnt off, the early morning sun light illuminates the karst limestone cliffs of the Roark Bluffs.

When I was there, the Buffalo River was perhaps 12 to 18 inches deep and easily wadeable. I don’t know that it’s always like that and the stones on the river bank suggest it’s often deeper and flowing faster. Still, with the conditions we experienced, setting up the tripod in the river allowed me to get this shot, a view I would not have had from the river bank.
