Twitter The challenge of becoming sober: my decades of (somewhat) problematic drinking Photo by Chris F on Pexels.com So as we near the end of dry January, it makes me think a little bit about my own relationship with alcohol. I did not partake in dry January this year. Perhaps maybe I should have.
I started drinking in college and it followed a similar pattern throughout my 20s, 30s and now 40s. Me going out with friends to have a few drinks with it often ending in me being too drunk. I never set out with the intention of getting drunk but often get caught up in the moment or stay out too long. I also was famous in my younger years for taking shots. It was spontaneous. It was fun. It was stupid.
One time, nearly twenty years ago, I even got banned from a bar. I think the owner who imposed the ban—a friend/acquaintance of mine—did it to scare some sense into me. It never really worked unfortunately…because being the nice person he was, he eventually let me come back and so I never took advantage of the opportunity to learn from my mistake and identify I had a problem.
