They were looking for a more pleasant way to drink their anti-malaria medicine – quinine extract from Peru – and so mixed this with soda water, sugar and gin! And so the story goes of some of the very first G&Ts consumed in the world.
Quinine has an extremely bitter taste and so mixing it with soda water was one way of somewhat reducing it’s bitterness. This mix was still too bitter to drink however, and so by mixing it with gin, those crafty British soldiers had – unknowingly – invented one of today’s most iconic and easy to mix cocktails!
