Marcel, a younger version of the narrator, provides the perspective of the much acclaimed work, set in the latter part of the 19th Century. The narrative returns to this time past: and to his comfortably bourgeois family; to the life of Françoise, who is employed by aunt Léonie; and, that of other occasional visitors to Combray. He remembers joining his family on long walks out from their home into the local countryside. He is reminded of how the beauty of the walk along the path once made him happy.

The Méséglise Way happens to go past the home of Charles Swann, a friend of the family. He is married to Odette and has a daughter, Gilberte.
