Taos is a place that offers space. The miles of open landscape and sky sweeping all around us create a physical space that is felt everyday. People talk about the light and how it has a particular lucidity and vibrance here. I’ve heard it said that the cultural heritage is felt in a palpable way here. I have even heard it is because the Sangre de Christo Mountains sitting so close to the gorge of the Rio Grande that create a particular energy. Whatever the cause, there is a civic sensibility here that humanity needs the arts. There is no question of its usefulness or purpose. It is inherently valuable as part of life.
Dwarka Bonner and Lawrence Herrera settled in Taos by different means but through the same seeking of a place that offers that rare combination of support, tolerance, and freedom. Both having spent a big part of their lives in the Bay Area, their art brings an element of sea level to the high desert. The play of nature is a constant source of inspiration for their work.
