The Tomb of the Diver has been a vivid and constant presence in the mind of artist Olivia Booth for the twenty-five years since she first encountered it in person. In what world did a person ask to be buried with such an exalted image, a diving body plunging—no, floating—into a cloudlike pile of water? Who were they and why isn’t that our world today?
For her project at Tarp, Olivia Booth has roughly transposed elements from The Tomb of the Diver into our dry and dusty pool. Viewers will go down into the pool chamber while the sun sets and light cast by a glass rondel sconce becomes more and more pronounced. That glass form being as near to the clear stirring of water as will happen in this pool.
