A Current Shunt resistor may seem to be a simple component, but its function is vital. The component pictured is a Precision, Low Ohm, 4 Terminal Current Shunt and is used wherever current sensing is desirable. Depending on size, this series has a power rating of 1 to 13 watts all with a highly stable electrical configuration.
This type of surface mount resistor is available in a metal film or wire wound configuration. The advantage is that it can be mounted directly to the board via pick and place, and has a lower profile than standard thru-hole axial leaded resistors. The power rating on these range from 0.5 watts up to 3 watts. They are also available in non-inductive windings with tolerances to 0.01%.
