Since 1991, when Kumar Barve became the f irst Indian-American elected to a state legislature, the political participation of Americans of South Asian origin has only grown across the local, state and federal arenas. In 2023, there are at least 41 elected Democratic lawmakers of South Asian origin in state legislatures and five in Congress.
