!–The LMAOs are one of an on-going series of unique works in which Schulhauser ‚emoticonizes‘ such famous artists like Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), John Baldessari (1931-2020), Cindy Sherman (b.1954) and Lucian Freud (1922-2011), as well as young upcoming artists. Schulhauser uses therefore primarely en-face portraits that he sources from online archives and social media.
Presorted by search engines according to various parameters, the founded photos go through a multi-stage algorythmic sequenced process. It extracts the faces from their backgrounds, reduces them to the relevant essential physiognomic characteristics and places them as single and group portraits onto mostly monochromic shining colors.
In the next step, neural network based AI applications precisely and subtly change and manipulate the faces to the state where Schulhauser sends them back into virtuality as a digital image or analogizes them as paintings or prints. – A strange and shining laughter on the face appears where there was none before.–
