The University of Turin ( Italian : Università degli Studi di Torino , or often abbreviated to UNITO ) is a university in the city of Turin in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy . The University of Turin was founded as a studium in 1404, under the initiative of Prince Ludovico di Savoia . From 1427 to 1436 the seat of the university was transferred to Chieri and Savigliano . It was closed in 1536, and reestablished by Duke Emmanuel Philibert thirty years later.
