All markings except cassettes are done by lasers on white patches applied to the sample container. The coatings are specially formulated such that they turn dark black upon laser marking. This approach ensures high contrast ( PCS) bar codes when compared to inherent laser surface modification techniques.
Cassettes are marked by applying a specially formulated black patch onto the cassette surface and then laser ablating away the undesired black areas. The black patch has high adhesion to the (slippery) cassette surface. See Patent USP6518542 .
