A slot is a narrow notch or opening, such as a keyway in machinery or a slit for a coin in a machine. It can also refer to a position in a schedule or program, such as a time that someone is available for a meeting or an appointment. A slot can also be a part of an object, such as a car seat belt or CD player. If something slots into it, then it fits in the space or compartment where it is supposed to be located.
A football player who lines up near the middle of the field is referred to as a slot receiver. They are usually faster than outside wide receivers and typically excel in running precise routes. In addition, they must block nickelbacks, safeties, and outside linebackers. In running plays designed to the outside of the field, the slot receiver is responsible for sealing off defensive ends and performing a crack back block.
