This has meant that in recent years, very few dogs have become available for adoption. After more than 20 years of rescuing and rehoming over 500 Westies in Ireland, this seems an opportune time to me to hang up the boots, and wind the rescue up. Westie Rescue Ireland was set up in 2005 by Maureen Byrne, in response to the increasing numbers of Westies being abandoned and surrendered into dog pounds around the country at the time.

We rescue and rehome an average of sixty Westies every year. That’s a lot of dogs, but it is only a proportion of the Westies who are rehomed via other channels, or put to sleep, every year.
